Winter Sports Day Chapelfield
Posted February 24th, 2010 by Norfolk Snowsports
On Saturday 20th February, Norfolk Ski Club took part in an unusual event which bought a taste of the Winter Olympics to City shoppers.
Early arrivals to the Chapelfield shopping centre came across a hive of activity as a dry slope and an ice rink were being erected in Chapelfield Plain. By 8am the group of volunteers from Norfolk Ski Club turned up to set out the skis, boots and boards and generally get ready to man the dry slope.
Des Coe, Paul Spooner and Jim Sivyer put their heads together and, with some advice from the Club freestyle riders, devised a launch pad at the top of the slope which gave enough momentum to allow riders to grind the rails.
Pumping music from the Radio Norfolk DJ helped Club riders put on a great display for the admiring public. The big screen organisers placed a camera at the bottom of the slope so all the action was streamed, live, to the big screen situated over the entrance to the shopping centre.
After the display, a quick change around left the slope ready for members of the public to have a free try at Skiing, Boarding or Tubing. Lots of young people had a go on the slope and a few older ones as well. Ashlea Martin, Adrian Sexton and Nigel Riches were kept busy kitting people up while Rod Stevenson, Millie Rhead and Justin Dennis were keeping everyone safe and making sure all were having a good time on the slope.
By 4.30 pm the Club riders had showed off their freestyle skills and over 60 people had tried out the slope and hopefully have been inspired to come and learn to ski or board at the Club.
